About Odonata Beer Company
Odonata Beer Company was founded in 2009 by Peter Hoey & Rick Sellers in Sacramento California. We're a family owned craft brewery with a passion for traditional Belgian-style ales. We also have a sister winery, Odonata Wines, which is owned at operated by Denis Hoey, Peter's brother. Many of our beers are aged in wine barrels from Odonata Wines.
We are currently planning on opening a brewery of our own in Sacramento in 2010.
Peter was born and raised in Sacramento, a product of the Christian Bros High School, graduate of California State University Sacramento and longtime brewer in the region. Before he could legally drink beer, Peter was an assistant brewer at the now-closed Sacramento Brewing Company where he worked under Sam Petersen. His passion for brewing led him to the American Brewers Guild, then to Sierra Nevada Brewing Company where he worked as a shift brewer. His first brewmaster role came at Bison Brewing in Berkeley where Peter found instant success, culminating in a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival for his Saison. Fate brought Peter back to Sacramento to head up the brewing operations at Sacramento Brewing where his brewing prowess only expanded - winning Best of Show at the California State Fair and top honors at the World Beer Cup and more medals at the GABF. When Sacramento Brewing shut its doors in 2009, Hoey had established himself as one of the elite brewers in the state -- and the brewery had never sold more beer than when he was on the brew deck.
When not brewing, Peter is a brewing instructor for the American Brewers Guild, as well as the world-famous brewer's program at UC Davis. He has a lovely wife and an adorable daughter (the namesake for Rorie's Ale) with a boy expected in 2010!
Rick has been a beer writer for the past several years and was the founder of Pacific Brew News, one of the first beer-related podcasts available. His site caught steam early and was soon featured in beer magazines across the country. He spent several years as the Beer Director for DRAFT Magazine, the world's largest beer-related magazine, and in that capacity was able to travel the country to see the best and most obscure brewing operations in the USA. He's been featured on NPR, as well as a handful of morning shows from coast-to-coast.
When not promoting Odonata Beer, Rick enjoys time with his wife, Tracy, as well as honing his photography skills indoors and outside. Additionally, Rick likes to believe he's a chef & coffee roaster, world traveler and literary genius.
